OSY No More: 17 Boys from Eastern Samar and Leyte go to KEITECH

30JUN2015, Kananga Leyte. Today's rains could not hamper an exciting milestone for 17 youthful Yolanda victims (7 from Leyte and 10 from Eastern Samar). They comprise the first batch of Out-Of-School-Youth (OSY) who are now enrolled in various 3-month technical/vocational (techvoc) courses at Kananga EDC Institute of Technology (KEITECH) in Kananga Leyte, through the sponsorship of Plan International funded under the ADB JFPR Grant 9175.

Our 17 boys, together with other KEITECH enrollees attend an orientation on the Values Formation Program of KEITECH. In this orientation, the resource speaker reminded enrollees that, “It is the work and attitude that employers are looking for.” Hence, KEITECH ensures not only skills training but values and discipline formation.

These 17 boys are part of the more than 200 youngsters from 30 municipalities who underwent a very rigid screening by Plan International prior to being offered a techvoc scholarship. The remaining majority of these qualifiers (boys and girls) will see their first day "in school" by mid-July at the Balicuatro College of Arts and Trades (BCAT) in Allen, Northern Samar.

The 17 hopefuls, accompanied by Community Development Facilitators assigned in their barangays: Diana Baradan, Nickson Gensis, Cristita Alvarina, Roxanne Dela Cruz, Jade Paitan, Jayson Laurente, John Catubay and Area Team Leaders Divine Bandola and Nelson Oquias, received a special audience cum quick briefing on the Carpentry course by the Carpentry Instructor. In the orientation, he promised comprehensive Carpentry training including Masonry and Welding. Carpentry, along with Electrical Installation Maintenance (EIM) and Plumbing, is among the available courses for the extension program of KeiTech.

Count 3 months after their first day at either institution and they should be marching around with TESDA NC-II Certificates ready to embark on their respective livelihood businesses or ready for employment at various institutions worldwide. KEITECH, BCAT and Plan International will be behind them all the way, until they are gainfully at work!

It is operated by KEITECH Educational Foundation, Inc., established as a tripartite collaboration among Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the Local Government Unit of Kananga and TESDA Regional Office No. VIII.
